retrospective: an online portfolio

Andrew Budke

Associate Architect, Grand Forks, ND

My first months studying Architecture were very disappointing. Everything was so unlike my expectations that I wanted to quit, get out and try my hand at something, anything else. But with a little time I began to understand what Architecture could be and what it means to people.

That's what brought me back - the power of good design and its ability to improve the quality of people’s lives. Now it’s hard to imagine doing anything else; as an architect, I can be a positive force in the world.

I keep this in mind when I craft my designs. My goal is always a delightful space, a harmony between human experience and the tectonics of Architecture.

This portfolio This site contains a record of design work completed while studying Architecture at North Dakota State University. The record is meant to be inclusive but not necessarily comprehensive – I hope it paints a picture of my abilities and growth without becoming cumbersome.

I find this platform valuable in several ways. The first is practical: publishing this information online allows one to reach many more people than would be possible by mail. Second, it allows for retrospection. Portfolios can be fun to assemble, but they suffer from limited space. An online portfolio, however, can accommodate many more projects and much more information about each. I’ve seized the opportunity to reflect a bit on each project. In this way, the portfolio becomes valuable for learning rather than a simple presentation tool.
